KUZU, Kudzu Leather (Senior Research Project)
KUZU is my graphic design senior capstone project, developed as a comprehensive response to the environmental strain of traditional leather production and the overlooked abundance of the invasive kudzu vine. While leather manufacturing relies on resource-intensive and polluting processes, kudzu continues to spread rapidly across the southern United States, typically treated as waste rather than potential. This project reframes that imbalance by repurposing kudzu into a sustainable, biodegradable leather alternative, giving new value to an ecological burden while proposing a cleaner, more responsible material for the future. Through a complete brand identity, physical kudzu leather prototypes, environmental billboards, informational print and digital systems, motion design, packaging, and an educational video, the project demonstrates how graphic design can operate beyond aesthetics by using research, material exploration, and storytelling to address environmental problems through cohesive visual systems.
